6/30/2023 0 Comments We should all be feminists bookIn December 2005, in a plane crash in southern Nigeria, Okoloma died. Okoloma was funny and intelligent and wore cowboy boots that were pointy at the tips. He lived on my street and looked after me like a big brother: if I liked a boy, I would ask Okoloma’s opinion. Okoloma was one of my greatest childhood friends. At the end, their standing ovation gave me hope. And so that evening as I stood onstage, I felt as though I was in the presence of family – a kind and attentive audience, but one that might resist the subject of my talk. I suspected that it might not be a very popular subject, but I hoped to start a necessary conversation. I decided to speak about feminism because it is something I feel strongly about. When my brother Chuks and best friend Ike, both co-organizers of the TED圎uston conference, insisted that I speak, I could not say no. It seems to me that the word feminist, and the idea of feminism itself, is also limited by stereotypes. I had spoken at a different TED conference a few years before, giving a talk titled ‘The Danger of the Single Story’ about how stereotypes limit and shape our thinking, especially about Africa. Speakers from diverse fields deliver concise talks aimed at challenging and inspiring Africans and friends of Africa. This is a modified version of a talk I delivered in December 2012 at TED圎uston, a yearly conference focused on Africa.

The reviews were not promising but then again, the reviews of the first one didn’t promise much either. I enjoyed the strangeness of Dawn Metcalf’s debut novel ( about a girl who takes off her skin) and so I was intrigued by her latest offering. There were other kids at MBA, but I hadn’t been given any choice in selecting them. Not only did we have to deal with the same lousy dehydrated food and cramped sleeping spaces and sadistic toilets as the adults, but there were a host of other problems for kids. But as hard as it was for the adults, it was even worse being a kid there. It turned out, living on the moon was far more difficult than anyone had predicted. When NASA had recruited us, they had made it sound like MBA would be the most exciting, amazing, incredible place in the universe.
